PHOTO DISCLAIMER: the lighting isn’t perfect here, that’s why assistants are so handy for testing and such…but this post isn’t about lighting, its about honoring these peeps…
Recently I received an email from an old assistant telling me about a contest Photoshelter was sponsoring. It was to HONOR our beloved bag haulers, go-fers, lets see how much we can carry in one trip, the extraordinary photographer’s assistant. These peeps are truly the unsung heros for all the smooth sailing that go on behind the scenes.
It got me thinking about how assisting can sometimes act as a rite of passage before entering the big leagues. Over the past 5 years I’ve had some pretty rad assistants who not only taught me how to text with one hand and hold a light with the other, but they showed me how to see differently. Can’t thank you all enough so thought I’d make it public record.
If you want to discover some inspiring fresh talent, check out the following peeps:
Benjamin Stone and Emily Smith of Smith & Stone…my first assistants ever. They are in NYC proving that two heads are better than one. Ben and Em shoot people and edgy fashion that is perfect for Italian Vogue. Did I mention they are hot too: smithandstone.com
Azuree Norman, soon to be Azuree Wiitala…She resides in Chicago and is stalking Kanye West for me. Seriously though, she is a fantastic realistic documentary style street photographer. Azuree notices things most people wouldn’t and thank God, because its very entertaining stuff. Bunnies 4 Life girl: azuree.tumblr.com
Isabelle Ribeiro…This quasi-punk-lost lover-mother-fracker-harry potter maniac takes disturbingly beautiful fine art photographs of anatomically correct dolls. She treats them as I would a person for a photo shoot, pay close attention to detail, posing, hair, wardrobe, etc: chibikitsune.com”
